72% of IBM mainframes support mobile and Web applications

But could the extra processing workload increase system response times and drive up costs?

72% of IBM mainframe users polled in a new Macro 4 survey have revealed that their organizations' mainframe computers now support Web or mobile applications, with a further 8% expecting to do so within the next three years.

However, while 97% of the survey sample believes the mainframe is a strong platform for supporting Web and mobile applications, 38% are concerned about the potential for higher mainframe usage costs or CPU upgrade charges due to the extra workload imposed by these newer areas. 28% are worried about the possibility of slower response times for end users due to the increase in transaction processing.

When new online systems are integrated with mainframe applications, they often expose inefficiencies in the way they use processing power.

Fortunately, Macro 4's application performance management software can help you identify and correct those errors, leading to faster responses and better service levels. More efficient code will also result in the same workload being handled using less processing power - minimizing software licensing charges and relieving the pressure to invest in additional processing capacity.

The survey of 60 mainframe users was conducted at the GSE UK Conference in October 2014.
